Cardinal Flower   (Lobelia cardinalis)

Lobelias belong to the Campanulaceae Family and are very common throughout the U.S. There are at least five species of lobelias that can be found in Scott County; two of the most attractive are Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) and Great Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica). Cardinal Flower can be found in open, moist places along streams. The bright red blooms are produced on 2'-4' stalks during late summer. Cardinal Flower is one of the favorite foods of humming birds.
