Clematis     Virgin's Bower is a member of the Buttercup Family (Ranunculacae) and is found in the Eastern U.S. from Southern Canada south to Georgia. This climbing vine can be found trailing over fences and shrubs in open, moist areas. Here in Scott County, C. virginiana blooms in late August thru early September. Male and female flowers are found on separate plants; the 1" (2.5 cm) flowers are found in clusters arising from the leaf axils. Feathery fruit develop from the female flowers in autumn. These feathery plumes are sometimes called "Old Man's Beard".
